Title: Unit 8 I’ll clean up the city parks.

Material: Go For It! (Grade 9, 45 minutes)

Instructor: Wang Bo (汪波)

Observer: Jennifer

Venue: Xinmao School, Ningbo

Time: 9:00a.m. ~9:45 a.m.

Date: Oct.23, 2009

Unit 8 I’ll help clean up the city parks.

Target language:

What would you like to help do?

I hope to clean up the city parks.

I volunteer to cheer up the sick people.

Teaching aims:

1.      Students learn how to offer help

2.      Grasp the phrasal verbs

3.      Learn to care for others and the society.

Teaching procedures:

Step 1 Free talk

Free talk is used to make the students feel less nervous.

Step 2 Warm-up and presentation

T: A looks unhappy. B, would you like to make him happier? I mean you can cheer him up. (Write cheer up on the blackboard.)

Today, I am happy because I cleaned up all the rooms in my house last night.  Present:  Do you always help your mother do something? Then present: Do you always help do something for your classmates? Do you help do something for others?

Step 3 Lead-in

Present the new phrasal verbs by showing pictures.

Use the target language to do it:

I would like to help                 . (kinds of persons)

I hope to                           .(the volunteer work)

I volunteer to                         .

I would like to                        .

Step 4 Practice

In order to consolidate the new phrases, do some exercises. Match A with B and fill in the blanks with the given phrases.

Step 5 Drill

After students practice the new phrases, use the target language to practice the conversations.

A: What would you like to help do if you were a volunteer?

B: I would like to help                   .

A: I think you could              .

B: What about you? What would you volunteer to do?

A: I hope to               .

B: I think you could                         .

Step 6 Listen

1. Look at the books; describe the pictures in 1a by asking the question: what would they like to do as a volunteer?

2. Then ask the students to think of more ways they could help people.

3. Do Activity 1b. Present 1b by asking: what do they hope to do? Let’s listen. And please find the right answers.

4. Show a group of volunteers and say they are coming up with a plan : a City Parks Clean-Up Day. How could they do to let others know their plan? Let the students think up the ways.

5. Teacher asks: You have come up with many great ways , how many ways do they think up ? Do Activity 2a and 2b

Step 8 Do a survey

T: Helping others is helping ourselves. So let’s be volunteers to help others. If you were volunteers, what would you like to do? Four students are in a group. S1 writes what they say and fills in the chart. The rest ask the question and give the advice.

Name

The things we volunteer to help do

The things we could do

S1

Help the old

Visit the old people’s home

S2

S3

Then make a report like this:

We would like to help others. So we did a survey about what we would like to help do. Here are the results. Sally would like                    . So we think she could                      . Tom hopes                           . So we think he could                                  . Tony volunteers                     . So we think he could                      . I hope                     . My friends think I could                               .

Step 9 Homework

1. Finish the report

2. Read the materials in 1b and 2b.

Reflective thinking:

This is the first period of Unit 8. The students are expected to learn how to offer help by using “I will…, I would like…, I hope… and I volunteer …” and some phrasal verbs. And also they are encouraged to be volunteers to help others. During the class, I think I finish all the teaching tasks on the whole. But there are some deficiencies in it.

1. I did not give the students instructions briefly and clearly enough. So sometimes the students can’t understand what I asked them to do.

2.  I sometimes give the instructions repeatedly, so it makes my class rushed, maybe it’s a waste of time.

3.  It took too much time to present the new phrases and expressions. So I should use fewer pictures, such as the pictures of the dirty streets and of the old people.  Because the students know how to express how to help the old people and keep the streets clean, it’s unnecessary to present and teach again.

4.  I should try to use positive language to encourage the students in class instead of the negative language. For example, it’s better to use “I believe you can make it” instead of “I think it’s too easy”.
