Title: Unit7 Would you mind turning down the music? (reading &writing)

Material: Go For It! (Grade 8B, 45 minutes)

Instructor: Gao Jiqin(高继琴)

Venue: High-Tech Zone Foreign Language School, Ningbo

Time: 13:15 a.m. ~ 14:00 p.m.

Date: Apr. 13, 2010.

Teaching aims

1. Knowledge Aims:

The students will be able to understand & use the following

Words & expressions: cut in line; mad; try to do

Patterns“Would you mind doing…?” and “Could you please do…?”

2. Ability Aims:

The students will be able to make requests & apologize.

3. The attitude and culture aim:

The students will be able to learn to understand when & how to ask people for help in a polite way.

  

I. Warm-up

    Help Eric find the problems in his English test and correct them. Teacher writes down the incorrect answers on the board. Make Ss revise with what they have learnt. Finish self-check on page 57.

II. Lead-in

T: Eric has his problems. What about you? Have you met any unhappy things? Here is an example. Can you guess what it is?

T shows the video of Mr. Bean and makes Ss guess what Mr.Bean did. Elicit key sentences: Cutting in line is an annoying thing.

T: When annoying things happen, what do people do? Let’s see some examples. (Lead to text reading)

III. Reading

(1)  Skim and scan: Underline the annoying things and circle what people do.

(2)  Silent reading: Find the more details in the passage.

(3)  Listen to the tape without looking at book. Fill in the blanks and try to retell. Ask two Ss to retell the main ideas according to the passage mind-map.

(4)  Polite or not: Distinguish what solutions are polite.

IV. Practice

(1)  Pair work: Teacher ask one student to help with a conversation

A: What annoys you?

B: I get annoyed when someone smokes in public.

                   people smoke in public.

A: What do you do?

B: When this happens, I usually say, “Would you mind not smoke here?” I usually ask him/them not to smoke here.

    Ask Ss to make their own conversation in pairs by using new examples. Then ask one or two pairs to present.

(2)  Group work: Make a survey.

Divide Ss in group of six. Give each group a name of a place on a note. Then the group members talk about the annoying things may happen in this place. One student writes down all the information and get ready for a report.

V. Writing

  Eric’s new problem: Help Eric write a polite letter to his new neighbors.

(1)   Look at the picture and say what makes Eric annoyed.

Ss: throw out of the window/ throw about

   Play music loudly…

(2)   Make Ss write with the help of key words.

(3)   Ask two or three Ss to read their letters to the class.

VI. Homework

Finish the letter on exercise book. Talk with your friends about more annoying things and try to find the solutions.
