Graduation Ceremony课堂赏析

Teaching material: Graduation Ceremony

Teaching objectives

Instruction objectives:

1.       Language:

l         The students will be exposed to the following vocabulary:

a)         unforgettable ( adj)

b)        graduation, ceremony, custom, principal, official, diploma, course, possibility(n.)

c)         congratulate, mark, come to an end, bring about(v.)

l         Students will be practicing the usage of these words and expressions.

2.       Reading strategy:

l         Students will be able to predict according to the illustration of the article.

l         Students will be able to scan for specific information.

3.       Affection:

l         Students will be able to imagine their own graduation ceremony and aware everything comes to an end. Therefore, they will treasure the time they stay with others before graduation.

l         Students will communicate with others to express their feelings about graduation ceremony and talk about plans for future.

Procedures:

Teaching procedures

Learning procedures

Warming-up: The students get involved in the topic.

1.       Before class, the teacher plays a video and encourages the students to predict what it is mainly about.

2.       The teacher asks questions to arouse students’ good memory of time they spent with their friends:

Do you have a good friend?

What do you usually do?

3.  The teacher shows the sayings: Everything comes to an end. Then the teacher has the students to predict what they will do before graduation.

1. The students will be able to get close to the topic of the article during the course they are watching the video.

2. The students will be able to talk the memorable time they spend with their friends.

 

 

 

3. The students will be able to imagine what they will do before graduation.

Pre-reading: The students suggest hypotheses.

1.       The teacher shows the picture of a graduation ceremony to help students predict what they will do in the graduation ceremony with the help of a mind map.

2.       The teacher elicits the new words according to what students predict using derivative method.

1.       The students will be able to answer wh- questions about graduation ceremony according to the help of a mind map.

 

2.       The students will be able to understand and read the new words: principal, official congratulate, etc.

While-reading: The students understand the passage.

1st time reading: skim for general idea

The teacher has the students skim the title and passage to find out the topic of the article.

The students will be able to skim the passage for the topic according the title and what they have predicted.

2nd /3rd time reading: scan for details

1.       The teacher asks the students to read the passage for the second time, and answer the questions:

1)      What is a graduation ceremony?

2)      Where is the ceremony usually held?

3)      During the ceremony, what do the best students do and what does each graduate receive?

4)      What do students usually do after the graduation ceremony?

2.       The teacher helps the students to summarize Paragraph 1&2 according to the answers they just found.

3.       The teacher asks the students to read the

4.       last paragraph and complete the table. They can also add their own opinions about

1.       The students read the passage for the second time and will be able to find out the answers.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

2.       The students will be able to read the answers and summarize first two paragraphs with the help of the answers.

3.       The students will be able to find the answers from the last paragraph and express their feelings about graduation ceremony.

Post-reading: The students apply the reading in their real life.

The teacher asks the students to do a pair work imagining they are in the graduation ceremony and they are talking about their feelings and plans. They will be asked to use the new words and expression in the article as many as possible. It helps them to combine what they have learned with their own experiences.

A: Hi, Sam! Were leaving soon. How do you feel now?

B: I feel sad.

A: Really! Why?

B: Because it marks the end of a period in a  students  school life.

A: Oh, take it easy. It brings about new possibilities. Who comes to congratulate you today?

B: My parents.

A: And what are you going to do after graduation ceremony?

B: I am going to travel first. Then I am going to…

A: That sounds wonderful! Have a good time!/ Keep in touch!

Tips: Please use the expressions or new words from 1a as many as possible. Such as: custom, principal, official, diploma, congratulate, mark, unforgettable, possibility,

 

Sum-up: Everything comes to an end. Though it is unforgettable, changes bring about new possibilities.

The students in pairs will be able to make a conversation and show it in front of the class with the help of the model. At the same time, they will be able to use the new words with the help of the mind map on the blackboard.

 

Homework

Level A: Please search some information about another ceremony. Share with your classmates.

Level B: Make sure you can read all the new words and write your diary. Send it to me. Read to your classmates tomorrow.
